Being a parent can help to make our life’s journey meaningful and worthwhile, and can add pleasure to the journey itself. When the basic mechanics are working smoothly we are close and connected, feeling good about ourselves and our child, and difficulties along the way can be navigated without getting off course. But, in our being parents we also find our greatest challenges. Many parents suffer long before the baby is born; suffer with worry that all is not right and the they are not fit to be a mother or father, that they carry too much damage from their own childhood to be able to know what their baby needs from them. You are aware that your baby’s emotional well being is dependent on your being emotionally available.
We now have so much understanding of the sensitive relationship between baby and mother. We can use this understanding to help you and your child connect more fully in a safe bond together. You do not need to figure this out for yourself. It is important for your infant, and for you, to begin as soon as is possible to learn how to find the inner world of your child and build the safe world your infant needs. Ways we are that get in our way of connecting to our infant can be understood and can shift even during pregnancy, allowing you both a more satisfying and nurturing beginning.
My work with a parent begins with caring for your inner self you bravely bring and dare to hope I will be see. We can understand what is working now and the possibilities for growth that you see for yourself, and for your relationship with your infant. We can also find what may not be working and see how to change some of the directions you are going. I have an appreciation and understanding of the sensitivity and complexity of a mother’s relationship with her infant, and I can help you two negotiate an exchange of some of old ways of being in relationship that you have known for ones that can bring you together. Working together we can increase your closeness and strengthen your connection to your baby.
